• In theory you can use any statistical software for performing the calculations in the lectures - and the exercises, but - supervision will only be given for MINITAB and R.
• For the exercises the solutions will only be given for MINITAB.

NTNU holds a cite license for MINITAB (Windows), you find all information you need here: MINITAB MINITAB is also available on several of the data labs on campus.

Information on how to download programs from Progdist are found at this address.

When you are at Progdist to download the software you go to the campus catalog to find the MiniTab folder. This folder is referred to as \campus\MiniTab In this folder is the installation file you have used, the licence file and the files Readme.txt which contains the instructions for installation. Maybe you save the licence file to your computer to make sure you have it. It is probably called Minitab16.lic. When minitab askes where is the licence file then you probably know where you have saved it to.

If you want to run MINTAB but work on a mac or under linux you may run remote desktop to the Windows-servers cauchy.math.ntnu.no by logging in with your "Win-Ntnu-No" user account. The following are instructions to run a remote resktop to a server at the Maths department where MINITAB is installed when you are at the Vegas computer lab (or at your windows laptop if you do not want to install MINITAB -but have the remote desktop program).

• Start-All Programs-Accessoires-Remote Desktop Connection
• New window: Computer: cauchy1.math.ntnu.no or cauchy2.math.ntnu.no
• New windos: win-ntnu-no/username and password

If you want to run a desktop from a mac you should download the "Remote Desktop Connection Client" from the following address and follow the instructions: download.

The first exercise will serve as an introduction to MINITAB.

On youtube Minitab INC has a channel with introductions, I would recomment the "How to Get Started using Minitab 16" (enter and input data) and "How to Analyze Data with Minitab 16" (basic stats and hypothesis test) from this channel.

Alternatively R can be used. R is available for free download at The Comprehensive R Archive Network (Windows, Linux and Mac).

I would also recommend that you install Rstudio which is an integrated development environment (system where you have you script, your run-window, overview of objects and a plotting window). I'll demonstrate at the lectures.

No introduction to R is planned, but may be given upon request.

A nice introduction to R is the book P. Dalgaard: Introductory statistics with R, 2nd edition, Springer and several manuals can be found at CRAN.

If you are unfamiliar with R, it is suggested that you go through the interactive session in Appendix A in the manual “An Introduction to R”, which comes with the software.
