Useful Software (mac)

Instructions for installing software on your mac are here. Some software may have more specific instructions linked to in its description. NTNU has a collection of software available for employees. This collection is available on the web, at Log in with your NTNU username/password.


LaTeXiT is a small pearl, capable of typesetting math expressions. After generating the expression, you may paste it in emails, Word documents, or other places where you just need a beutifully typeset formula right away. LaTeXiT is preinstalled on all Macs on the department.

These tools are available for free in the App Store.
You will need an AppleID-account to download and install them.

Amphetamine is a little app that lives in your menu bar. With Amphetamine, you can effortlessly override your energy saver settings and keep your Mac awake. Amphetamine supports Retina displays and OS X's dark mode. Amphetamine is 100% free (no ads, no in-app purchases). After you launch Amphetamine, you must activate it by clicking on its menu icon. If you do not activate Amphetamine, your Mac will sleep normally, per your energy saver settings.

Display Menu

Shows an icon in the Status menu. Clicking the icon brings down a menu with setup choices for all attached screens, and options for mirroring or extending the desktop.


With Keka you can compress as many files as you want in a bunch of formats. Divide files and protect them with a password is now a kids game. Just drop the files you want to compress to the Keka icon in the Dock or the main window.

Microsoft Remote Desktop

Microsoft Remote Desktop app lets you connect to a remote PC from anywhere.

The Unarchiver

The Unarchiver is an app that can open many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR, 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers.
