20.12 The evaluation of the second project is now available on It's learning
07.12 Some of you disagreed with the solution of exercise 2. In correcting the exam I will use the definition of cubic spline given in the book. If there is room for possible misunderstandings, I will take this into account in the evaluation.
07.12 The solution to the exam can be found on It's learning.
25.11 Allowed aids: Textbook Endre Süli and David Mayers, An introduction to Numerical Analysis. TMA4215 lecture notes (61 pages). Rottman. Photocopies from the textbook are also allowed instead of the book itself, but they should be kept separate from the note of the course to allow control. The book can not be filled with handwritten text, underlining and single-sentence annotations are allowed.
25.11 The note from the course allowed at the exam is 61 pages long. Print out THIS NOTE for the exam. Other smaller notes or lose chapters are not allowed.
23.11 The exercise class 14:15-15:00 Thursday 24th will be at R2 in Realfagbygget. Geir will cover some old exam problems.
21.11 The exercise class today 17:15-18:00 will take place at S4. I will cover problem 3 from the August exam of this year. This exam, along with the December 2009 exam are now available under Old exams.
16.11 KJL1 is confirmed for the exercise class 14:15-15:00 on Thursday 17th
15.11 In the exercise class on Thursday 17th, Geir will look at Problem 3 from the December 2007 exam. This class will be moved to an auditorium. Most likely, this auditorium will be KJL1 in the Kjelhuset, but I haven't gotten this yet. If there is a change, this information will be given in the lecture Thursday. Note about this problem: the monic Legendre polynomials are simply the Legendre polynomials (as in Süli & Mayers p. 263), scaled such that the leading term of <jsm> P_n(x) </jsm> is <jsm>xn</jsm>.
14.11 The results from the first project have (finally) been published on itslearning.
11.11 Clarification: Your report for the second project should not exceed 4 (four) pages.
10.11 Matlab files for euler and backward euler and the numerical verification of the order of the methods are available under schedule.
10.11 There was a horrible error in the first note about the implicit midpoint method. Please see the new version
10.11 I have published a short note about the implicit Runge–Kutta midpoint method on the Exercise page. Also, a small typographical error in the project has been fixed.
07.11 The spline exercise from last lecture is now available under schedule.
03.11 There was a small error in the statement of problem 1b) in the semester project. The <jsm> \f\prime\_\infty </jsm> factor should not be there. Also, <jsm> h_0 </jsm> might be infinite for some possible bounds.
01.11 During the second project, the exercise and project lecturers will also have office hours. See below for the times.
01.11 The minutes form the reference group meeting can be found in "It's learning"
26.10 The second project is now published on the exercise page.
25.10 The second part of the semeter project will be posted on this webpage by the end of this week.
25.10 Tomorrow the meeting with the reference group will take place. Please let Matthias and Stian know what you want them to discuss with us.
17.10 Exercise 5 has been updated.
12.10 I have now posted a new version of the note on linear algebra under "Schedule". Please let me know if you find misprints.
10.10 A new exercise and project lecturer will help Geir in his work. His name is Eirik Hoel Høiseth.
28.09 You will soon (perhaps already today) receive your kandidatnummer for the exam, please use this number on the project.
27.09 The schedule for Thursday 29.09 is lecture 12:15-14:00 in S1 and exercise class 14:15-15:00 at Nullrommet. (Apparently there was some confusion about this.)
27.09 Several of the project groups has explained that they don't see the point of doing steepest descent steps before switching to Newton's method. For these groups: What happens if <jsm> \b\</jsm> is large?
26.09 This Tuesday the lecture will be held by Brynjulf Owren, because Elena is lecturing somewhere else.
19.09 This week, lectures are replaced by extra exercise classes to let you work on your project. The exercise classes will be at Nullrommet. (Same place as the ordinary exercise class.)
13.09 So far we have just one person in the reference group. Please, consider volunteering for this.
12.09 The first project has been published at the exercise page
07.09 Exercise 2 has been updated.
31.08 Exercise 1 has been updated. Please see the exercise page
29.08 Since the material for the first exercise has not been covered in the lectures yet, the exercise class 04.09 will also be about exercise 1. Geir will also be available for answering general problems with installation and use of Matlab in these exercise classes.
25.08 The first exercise class is Monday August 28th. Please see the exercise page for further information.
17.08 First lecture on the 23rd of august 2011

Vurderingsform og fastsettelse av karakter i kurset
  1. Semesteroppgaven teller 30 prosent av sluttkarakteren. Avsluttende eksamen teller 70 prosent av sluttkarakteren.
  2. Om man ikke leverer inn semesteroppgaven har man likevel adgang til eksamen. Men merk at da blir maksimalt oppnåelig resultat 70/100, dvs bokstavkarakter C.
  3. Man krediteres kun for semesteroppgave gjort i inneværende semester. Man får ingen kreditt for semesteroppgave innlevert i tidligere år kurset har gått.
  4. Totalkarakteren er den eneste offisielle karakteren i kurset. Det som legges ut av delkarakterer på disse hjemmesidene er uoffisielt, og kan vel egentlig ikke refereres til ved en eventuell klage.

Evaluation system and marking in this course

  1. The project counts for 30 % of the final mark. The final exam counts for 70 %.
  2. Note that if you do not hand in the project you will be able to get a final result of 70/100 maximum, that is at most the mark C.
  3. You get credit only for project work made during this semester.
  4. The total mark is the only official mark for the course. The marking of the project which will be published on these webpages is nonoffcial, and can not be referred to during a complaint.
