TMA 4115 Spring 2016 Information for MTDT, MTIØT

This page contains information on the parallel TMA 4115 MTDT and MTIØT. For general information applying to all parallels of TMA 4115 see the main page of the course.

Teaching in this and all other parallels will be in english language. However, there are video recordings of lectures from Spring 2012 in Norwegian (see main page for more information). Notice that the curriculum of the lectures has slightly changed since 2012. Hence the recordings are slightly dated, leave out some material now part of the course and deal instead with some topics not contained in the current lecture.

===== Announcements

* There will be no lecture on Wednesday 27th April, the teaching period is over. Apologies for the confusion!

Schedule of the lectures

Mondays 08:15-10:00 in KJL2
Wednesdays 14:15-16:00 in EL3

Material and further Information

* In the first chapter of the lecture we discuss complex numbers. If you have an iPad there is an App which lets you explore complex numbers. The App is called "Simply complex" (by Andrew Stacey) and is available for free in the App Store. You should also try the Mathlets for complex numbers offered by MIT. You find the link on the left in the menu.

* I have received a few questions during the course concerning what material is examinable. Unfortunately, we cannot provide too detailed a list, however the lecture plan gives an excellent guideline. Generally, everything contained in the indicated sections of the course textbook should be considered examinable, with the exception of the QR factorization (the end of Lay 6.4, also appearing in Lay 6.5) and quadratic forms (Lay 7.2). We will make sure not to ask anything not covered in the lectures and exercise sessions.

* For those who have followed the video lectures, the content is similar to the above. The principle difference is that the LU factorization (Lay 2.5) is not included, whereas we no longer teach Cramer's rule (discussed in lectures 33 and 34 of the video lectures). Also note that complex quadratic equations are not covered in the video lectures (see Saff-Snider 1.5).
