The importance of the mesoscale processes in the Western Iberia oceanography
The relevance of the mesoscale features for the understanding of the Western Iberian ecosystem, the northern branch of the Canary Current Upwelling Ecosystem, is focused. Some upwelling related mesoscale structures are described and the implications for the exchanges through the coastal transition zone are stressed, along with its long term behaviour. Particular attention will be given to the upwelling filament structures and their ability to export material from the coastal regions to the open ocean. The challenges to suitably resolve these mesoscale features through direct observations are drawn and the views for future ocean observation schemes are outlined.
