Jarno Vanhatalo is an assistant professor of statistics at the University of Helsinki. He is affiliated at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (Faculty of Science) and the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Program (Faculty of Bio- and Environmental Sciences). His research interests span from statistics and machine learning to applied ecology and environmental risk assessment and management. Currently he works on hierarchical Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal modeling, especially joint species distribution modeling, Bayesian optimization, optimal design of observational studies, uncertainty assessment and data fusion with environmental simulators as well as environmental risk assessment related to Arctic shipping and oil transportation.
