Accessing the computer system from outside

Use the information on this page if you're using a laptop, your home computer or similar, and want to

  • use the terminal/shell as from a Linux office computer
  • opening a remote desktop
  • accessing files

Webmail

To check your email online, go to http://www.math.ntnu.no/webmail/.

In order to configure your email client, please see Configuring your email client.

Shell access

If you want shell access, you need to install a SSH client. We recommend PuTTY. You can either download just putty.exe (which is what you need), or the slightly more user friendly installer. Start PuTTY, and type login.math.ntnu.no in the Host Name field. Leave the rest as it is, and click Open. You will be asked for username and password.

Windows Terminal

To open a remote desktop, click Start, All programs (Alle programmer), Accessories (Tilbehør), and finally Remote Desktop Connection (Tilkopling til eksternt skrivebord). Enter one of the following in the Computer field:

  • heine.math.ntnu.no
  • borel.math.ntnu.no

After clicking Connect, you will be asked for username and password. If you use this often, you can click Options » in order to save settings.

Accessing files

Unless you're on campus, you need to enable the VPN connection. Open Computer from the Start menu, and click Map network drive. Use this folder:

\\mamba.math.ntnu.no\<username>

You might want to disable Reconnect on logon. When asked for credidentials, enter your username as WIN-NTNU-NO\<username> and your ordinary password.

(If VPN is unavailable) Use an FTP client (we recommend FileZilla), and connect with this information:

Field Data
Host login.math.ntnu.no/home/anne/<username>
Username (your username)
Password (your password)
Port 22

This is suitable for up- or downloading lots of data, but not for editing files directly.
